You decide what kind.

Nowadays the pendulum swings both ways, and without warning. One moment individuals think about the benefits of the ‘lockdown’ and another moment the idea makes many a heart sink.

Obsessing over the news, we watch for numbers of infected, likely candidates for infection, the ones tested awaiting results, the quarantined ones, the ones out of quarantine, the ones in isolation, the ones going bonkers wondering if they have the symptoms, and sadly, the ones who have passed away. The list is depressingly depressing.

While this mental engagement is going on, time is slipping away. Soon today will become yesterday and tomorrow will become today, devolving into yesterday….if we let it.
Are we willing to let this precious commodity slip away so frivolously? Confronted with the task of keeping our children fruitfully engaged, and finding some peaceful moments for ourselves too, all we need to do is sort through the necessary, the somewhat necessary and absolutely not necessary tasks of the day.

Luckily for us, order is what children love subconsciously and creating that order is up to us. Believe me, each one of us is capable.

Here are a few tricks that might help:
  1. Work with a timetable. You can download a sample timetable below. Each person’s situation is unique and a sample timetable cannot be a “one-size-fits-all” template. But it is an idea.
  2. Put away the ever-distracting, time-guzzling cellphone and screen devices while you work with your children. It is hardly surprising how time slips away unnoticed when you steal a glance at the screen- of any kind.
  3. Evaluate your day once you have put your children down for the day. This will help you plan tomorrow.

Here’s to a more engaging time with our kids!
